I'll admit upfront that Judy and I enjoy watching LONG ISLAND MEDIUM, which airs on Sunday nights on TLC. I'll also admit here and now that of course the show is an absolute, complete and total fake. If you think Teresa Caputo really does have the gift of seeing and speaking with the dead, I've got some swampland in Florida that's for sale.
There's absolutely no scientific, provable basis for a "medium". None whatsoever. The mediums who perform their acts in public are very talented con artists who can read people extraordinarily well and use those "tells" to lead their subjects where they want them to go and extract useful information from them. It's an entertaining act, but that's all it is.
But when you're starring in a popular television series (and LONG ISLAND MEDIUM is popular enough to have been parodied on this weekends' SNL broadcast), not even the talent of reading people is needed. Why? Think about it. It's a television show for crying out loud. It's all filmed and edited and the producers have absolute and total control over what makes it onto the air. Their job is to make sure they've got an entertaining program in which Teresa goes to private and group readings and generates results as well as having random encounters with people she "just happens to run into" during her day.
Yep, it's all as phony as a three-dollar bill. Skillfully and entertainingly done, I'll admit and Teresa and her family are all likable folks. But can she really see and speak to the dead? Nope.
But if you are one of those people who insist on believing in this sideshow, come see me about a bridge in Brooklyn.
And bring cash. Lots of it.
